The Internet Safety Blog describes ways to support appropriate use of technology and digital resources, which are of utmost importance when working with children. This artifact was completed individually as a Weebly blog post in ITEC 7430. The post specifically describes how the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA) protects children, as well as how teachers can help students understand their rights and responsibilities. Strategies involving students, teachers, and parents are discussed, and further resources are provided for keeping students safe when working online as an aspect of cybersafety. The last piece of the blog describes opportunities for global collaboration through technology, for which internet safety is important.
This artifact demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. In creating the Internet Safety Blog Post, it was necessary to research COPPA, digital citizenship, and global collaboration opportunities. With this knowledge, I was able to model and facilitate proper use within the classroom, and as an example for colleagues. One strategy discussed involving safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses was reviewing the county’s policy with students so that they understand that internet safety is not just relegated to classroom rules and procedures. A second strategy was creating specific classroom procedures based upon the county policies. A third strategy was sharing the aforementioned information with parents as additional support of safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use, specifically through the website Educational Technology and Mobile Learning, which describes digital citizenship. I also modeled and facilitated appropriate technology use by sharing information about the resource Common Sense, which provides free lessons that support digital citizenship, and Make Use Of, which offers cybersafety games. The inclusion of global collaboration within this artifact gave an opportunity for internet safety to be put into practice as part of an authentic, real-world activity.
From completing this artifact, I learned how COPPA protects students and my role in making students aware of, and enforcing, safe and ethical internet use. I also learned about multiple opportunities for global collaboration relating to visual arts, and how to help my students become involved. In improving the quality of this artifact, I would create a screencast about the ArtLink Program to relay further information to my blog audience, as well as an introduction tool for my students about the program that includes internet safety practices.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted student learning in that as their teacher, I am knowledgeable of and able to implement internet safety procedures. This will ensure that students have a positive experience each time they conduct research, play educational games, interact through social websites, and create or view online presentations. This impact can be assessed through follow-up student surveys or quizzes that can also be administered online through apps such as Kahoot or Quizizz.
