Reflection
The 7430 Podcast artifact was created as part of an Internet Tools in the Classroom blog assignment. The title of the blog sections describes podcasts as creative opportunities to engage students, parents, and the community. The specific podcast I created shared information about Brumby’s Yearbook Cover Contest, and it was created through the Anchor platform. This contest is open to all students, and the podcast allows the details to be shared with not only students but colleagues and parents as well. The Podcasting blog post also described use of podcasts for student collaboration and demonstration of learning, and to communicate goals of art lessons prior to students attending class.
This artifact demonstrates my ability to utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. The communication and collaboration tool being used is a podcast created through the Anchor platform. This tool can be shared locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. Anyone can access the podcast, but it can also be shared with specific classes, colleagues, and parents within the school community. There are ways to make the student podcasts accessible only to approved audiences. Use of podcasts as communication and collaboration tools supports the 4 Cs as student also need to use creativity and critical thinking in development of podcasts that show learning and as a means of self-assessment. Grade level teachers, administration, parents, other students, and the community could hear what is taking place in the visual arts at Brumby, which would also encourage parent and community participation in activities and learning goals.
From completing this artifact, I learned how to create a podcast that would engage students, and it could be used for instruction and/or assessment. I learned that podcasts could not only benefit student learning, but it could bring awareness to colleagues and parents about what is happening in the art classroom. One thing I would do differently to improve the quality of this artifact would be to include student examples of podcasts that showed learning or increased knowledge, or I could create parent surveys that analyzed their perception of the podcast information.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacts student learning in that the art lesson can be shared prior to class, information can be shared through text and talking, and revisited as often as necessary. Students can also use podcasts to share their learning and knowledge on a particular art medium, technique, or subject matter, individually or collaboratively. This impact can be assessed by student, teacher, and parent surveys that analyze podcast viewing and content as it relates to student engagement and achievement.
